When the people find out they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic. –Benjamin Franklin

Democracy can only work when the electorate is sufficiently educated and able to make rational and intelligent decsisions. When the electorate is uneducated the vote becomes emotional and devoid of any sense or reason. This places the unfortunate uneducated electorate at the mercy of the ruling party who can add any emotional spin they want as this is the only thing the electorate can relate to.

We see this on a daily basis as the ruling party continues to remind the electorate of where they have come from as they are unable to tell them where they are going. This emotional diatribe is unfortunately reinforcing racial polarisation.

Interesting is that the "born free's", as the young black matriculants like to call themselves (born post '94) have been found to be A-political. These youngsters have no political affiliation and simply do not have a "real grasp" on apartheid, their thinking is educated and not based along party political lines. We need more "born free's", it is these youngsters than can bring some measure of respectability to the democratic process.

One cannot have an electorate that suffers from "cognitive dissonance".
